Job Description:
Nxu is seeking a Battery Cell Engineer (Electrolyte) to join the
team that specializes in new electrolyte formulations and new
functional additives design, development, optimization, and
evaluation for Nxu's proprietary cube battery cell. - The
successful candidate will be focusing on new electrolyte
formulations and new functional additives investigations, to
further improve the battery performance (specific energy & energy
density, cycle life, calendar life), and improve battery safety
while reducing costs in the meantime for production ramps. - -

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position will be responsible for optimizing and developing
various electrolyte formulations and functional electrolyte
additives for high-performance Li-ion batteries for EV and BESS.

- Be responsible for lab-scale, pilot line, and mass
production-level testing, data analysis, and overall process
development of electrolyte materials to reach a production-ready
state. - -
- Be responsible for planning and conducting design experiments
to screen and develop promising electrolyte formulations or
functional electrolyte additives for different battery cell
chemistries. - -
- Optimize the electrolyte formulations to achieve and improve
cell performance such as specific energy & energy density, power
density, calendar life & cycle life, cell safety, and reduced
production costs in the meantime.
- Investigate the interphase mechanism for the reaction of anode
or cathode with electrolyte to further improve the Nxu cube cell
performance. -
- Plan and execute root cause analysis of failures incurred
throughout development and launch. -
- Collaborate with the quality team in their communication with
material suppliers to develop and validate detailed material
specifications for new materials and resolve any quality issues.

- Collaborate and communicate with internal and external
customers, vendors, or suppliers directly to optimize electrolyte
formulation to increase cell efficiency and cycle performance while
reducing material costs via empirical and theoretical modeling and
simulation. -
- Travel in this role is anticipated to be up to 15% between Nxu
HQ and other partners. - IDEALLY, YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH:
- In-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery
technology including material selection, fabrication, synthesis,
new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode
analysis. -
- Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery cell product
development. -
- Proven experience in operating cell cycles via the following
equipment (ex: Arbin, Maccor, Chroma, Neware, Biologic Battery
Tester, etc.). -
- Proven experience in testing battery cells via the following
test programs (ex: SOC, SOH, OCV, DCIR, dQ/dV, LSV, HPPC, PITT,
GITT, etc.). -
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able
to design and conduct complex experiments, employing the DOE
approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with
battery product performance. -
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, great passion,
and work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work as
a team player in collaborative, diverse, and inclusive working
environments. - AND YOU'RE SOMEONE WHO IS:
- MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials
Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
with a focus on electrochemistry, material synthesis &
characterizations, electrochemical techniques, or a related
