DIRECTOR, SPECIAL EDUCATION (SECONDARY)

Applications are being accepted for the position of Director of
Special Education (SECONDARY) with the Mesa Unified School
District. This Director will report directly to the Assistant
Superintendent of Special Education. The starting date is upon
hire. The beginning salary range for this 12-month position is
dependent upon education, preparation and like experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Assists in developing and implementing ongoing philosophy and
policy for the Special Education Department.
- Assists in program planning and writing proposals.
- Monitors the implementation of program guidelines, district
policies and regulations, statutes and laws of the state and
federal governments in special education matters.
- Coordinates the placement of students in special education
programs.
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of special education
personnel.
- Develops, promotes, and encourages professional growth
activities and in-service for special education personnel.
- Evaluates district-based special education teachers and
therapists in cooperation with school principals.
- Creates solutions to individual student and system
concerns.
- Assists in developing and monitoring the special education
budget.
- Coordinates the use and supervision of aides and
volunteers.
- Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:
- State of Arizona administrative certification; Master's Degree,
extensive education preferred
- A minimum of three years of successful special education
experience preferred.
- Specific administrative experience through internship and/or
previous employment.
- Professional growth evidenced in program completion in
educational administration.
- Emphasis will be given to evidence about the applicant which
indicates:
- Effective professional relationships with students, teachers,
administrators, parents and the community.
- Effective educational leadership in the profession through
membership and participation in the community and in the
professional organizations as well as activities with students,
teachers, community and individual projects.
- Effective organizational ability in all aspects of educational
programs.
- Skill in effective decision making.
- Ability to communicate effectively with faculty and staff.
- Forward-looking in educational views and evidence of a
willingness to accept change.
- Demonstrated competence in planning and developing educational
facilities.
