Job Title: Psychiatrist

Based at: Gallup, New Mexico


Job Summary: Sanford Federal is looking for a successful Psychiatrist who is very perceptive, has strong listening skills, and is an excellent critical thinker to support the mission of the Indian Health Service (IHS). A psychiatrist primary job is to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, and conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.


Requirements: The Candidate must meet the following requirements


  • Education and License:


  • A current, valid, active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States, throughout the hours of operation.
  • A current, valid, unrestricted drivers license in any state.


  • Experience:


  • A minimum of twenty-four (24) months of experience within their specialty.
  • A documented successful completion of a Psychiatric residency program.


  • Certifications:


  • A current Board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or Board eligibility.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is mandatory for all specialties.


  • Skills and Abilities:


  • Basic knowledge, skills, and abilities to use a computer.


  • Communication and Language:


  • Capable of reading, understanding, speaking, and writing English to effectively communicate with patients and other health care workers, and respectful of the local, American Indian and Alaska Native culture.
  • Capable of demonstrating sensitivity to cross-cultural and language differences and able to work through interpreters as necessary for non-English speaking patients, be cognizant of surrounding and adjacent communities, and be able to work with a diverse work force that is predominantly BI-lingual and Native American staffed.


Duties: The Psychiatrist will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:


  • Interview and examine medical patients, review past medical history, medication lists and requests and/or perform diagnostic tests and examinations, deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case.
  • Evaluate patient symptoms, designing treatment plans and educate the patient and family about their condition and initiating care.
  • Perform evaluation and diagnosis, care and treatment of behavioral health patients and consults from other departments or facilities.
  • Make preliminary diagnoses, directs, or provides treatment, or arranges for specialized care or patient referral as required.
  • Provide medication management as appropriate and evaluate efficacy of medication treatment and adjust as needed and base decisions upon information obtained, professional medical knowledge and skills and prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Consult with health professionals from other medical disciplines whenever necessary to more clearly define a patient's problem and seek assistance to safely provide the necessary interventions.
  • Refer patients to appropriate medical facilities, providing full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided at local IHS facilities.
  • Coordinate and integrate information obtained into the ongoing health care and assures the provision of timely follow up care as required.
  • Prepare appropriate medical records for patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data needed to provide comprehensive care.
  • Review prescriptions accurately following Federal and U.S. Public Health Service laws and policies. Standards of care developed or adopted by the professional staff of the facility shall be the criteria for appropriateness of drug therapy review.
  • Perform in accordance with the approved privileges through the credentialing process.
  • Make notes of observations to be incorporated into clinical records.
  • Provide emergency/crisis care as well as definitive management for cases that do not require referral and arrange follow up services.
  • Dictate clinical reports and correspondence concerning medical patients to physicians, hospitals, and other individuals and facilities.
