Description/Duties

This classification has been designated as a non-benefited, non-classified, non-merit system, at-will position.

The City of Mesa is currently recruiting for Lifeguard - Swim Lesson Instructors for the Summer Season. The Season runs from April 2021 through August 2021. Lifeguard - Swim Lesson Instructors may work 25 - 40 hours per week, depending on business needs.

As a Lifeguard - Swim Lesson Instructor you will provide instruction in swimming and/or diving and organize learning activities. You will monitor activities at a City swimming pool to prevent accidents and to rescue swimmers in distress. You will caution swimmers about safety hazards, maintain order in the pool area, and administer first aid. Other duties include completing accident reports, general cleaning duties, sweeping pool deck, removing debris from pool area, and providing general information to patrons.

Qualified applicants must successfully complete one skills testing. The first skills test will be offered on Saturday, March 21st and remaining staffing needs will be filled at a second skills test Saturday, April 4th. Skills testing will include an assessment of various lifeguard skills, fitness level, as well as a verbal interview. In order to attend either skills test, applications must be received online by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2020 and you must receive an email invitation with details of the skills testing event. Applications received after March 18th will be considered on an as-needed basis.

Additional Information:

Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certification classes are offered by the City of Mesa beginning in February. A skills test review is offered in March. All staff are required to purchase a black swimsuit/shorts uniform selected by the Aquatics Administration, and a Fox 40 whistle. Vendor information will be made available. Uniform shirts will be provided by the City of Mesa. Visible tattoos are acceptable unless they contain inappropriate lettering or images such as nudity or offensive language. Accessories are limited to post earrings only. Visible body piercing, including tongue and nose piercings, is not acceptable.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required.Applicants must possess avalid Lifeguard Certification, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification, and Water Safety or Swim Lesson Instructor Certification (WSI) by start date.

Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Some (1 - 2 seasons) experience in performing the duties of a lifeguard and instructing swimming classes is preferred. Bilingual in Spanish desirable.
