Update 4/20/2021: Applicants who scored a 70.00 or better on the First Interviews held between March 29 - April 1, 2021 have been invited (sent to the email address on the application on April 20th) to the next step in Mesa's testing and selection process for the 21-2 Academy, which is the Intern Orientation. The email contains instructions to register for the Intern Orientation by Monday, April 26th at 10:00 a.m. Arizona Time.

The Intern Orientation sessions are being held over 2 consecutive Saturdays or 2 consecutive Sundays, and candidates may register for only one pair of sessions: Saturday, May 8th and Saturday, May 15th, OR Sunday, May 9th and Sunday, May 16th. We are unable to accommodate scheduling candidates in any other combination of session dates. Each session will be 6:30 am - 4:00 pm. Participation is encouraged but not required. Candidates who do not participate in this Intern Orientation or are not selected for this Academy can remain on the list and may be considered for future Intern Orientations or Academies from this list.

For the safety and health of both candidates and staff, we will be taking preventive measures including practicing social distancing, wearing masks, and disinfecting surfaces between candidates. At the time of the Intern Orientation, if you are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms, have experienced symptoms within the previous 10 days, or have received guidance to self-quarantine, please help us to prevent the virus spread and do not participate as scheduled, and please reply to this email to let us know you will not be participating.

In preparation for the 21-2 Academy, Mesa's CPAT timeframe has been updated to accept passing CPAT results between May 7, 2020 and May 7, 2021, and documentation must be submitted at the first intern orientation attended.The CPAT licensee must then verify the CPAT result when contacted by Mesa.For a list of CPAT licensees by state, go to https://www.iaff.org/cpat-licensing/#licensees. Also for this Intern Orientation, National EMT or Paramedic certification will be required by May 7, 2021 and must be submitted at the first Intern Orientation attended.State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification will then be required before confirmation of conditional offers and must be kept current thereafter.For State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification information, see the Arizona Department of Health Services website at http://www.azdhs.gov/bems/certification/index.htm

  • Reminder: you must bring a copy of your CPAT and EMT/Paramedic certification/documentation to submit at your first Intern Orientation session.
  • If you are unable to provide your EMT/Paramedic and CPAT credentials by the deadlines described above, you will not be permitted to participate in this Intern Orientation, but you may remain on Mesa's List and could be reconsidered for future Academies.

At the Intern Orientation, you can also submit a 1-page or 2-page resume and will be provided with a hard-copy of your Mesa application to hand-write any additional information to add to your application. Please come prepared with specifics to add to your application if you need to update any of the sections on the application including education, work experience, certificates and licenses, employers/supervisors/references and their contact information for reference checking, and responses to supplemental application questions including criminal and traffic violation convictions.

Also on your first day of Intern Orientation, please bring a copy of your high school diploma/GED or college diploma/transcript to show that you had at least a high school diploma or GED by January 13, 2020.

The selection process for this Academy includes:

  • First Interviews March 29th - April 1st.
  • Voluntary Intern Orientation - 1 pair of sessions (May 8th/15th OR May 9th/16th).Participation is encouraged but not required.
  • National EMT or Paramedic certification and qualifying CPAT results will be required by the deadlines listed above and must be submitted at the first Intern Orientation attended.Candidates unable to provide their credentials at the time of Intern Orientation will not be permitted to participate.
  • State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification will then be required before confirmation of conditional offers and must be kept current thereafter.
  • Mesa expects to complete reference checking and extend conditional offers by June 11th.
  • The Mesa 21-2 Academy is expected to begin in September 2021.

Update 4/15/2021: 1st interview scores for all applicants who interviewed between March 29 - April 1, 2021 were sent via email (to the email address on the application) on April 15th. Applicants who scored a 70.00 or better are eligible to move forward in Mesa's testing process and will be notified of their status via email by 6:00 p.m. Arizona Time on Thursday, April 22, 2021.

Update 3/17/2021: MFMD has begun the interview and selection process for the 21-2 Academy anticipated for September 2021. Applicants who scored between 77% and 83% on the Written Exam, who have not already interviewed with Mesa or been previously invited to interview with Mesa during this recruitment, were invited via email to register for 1st Interviews by 6:00 p.m. Arizona Time on Monday, March 22, 2021.

In preparation for the 21-2 Academy, Mesa's CPAT and EMT/Paramedic certification timeframes have been updated. Passing CPAT results between May 7, 2020 and May 7, 2021 and EMT/Paramedic certifications by May 7, 2021 will be accepted. State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic certification will then be required before confirmation of conditional offers and must be kept current thereafter. Applicants moving forward in Mesa's selection process after the 1st Interviews will submit these later in the process.

Offers have already been extended for the MFMD 21-1 Academy. Additional interviews are not being scheduled at this time.

You may also choose to bring your own mask, and additional information and instructions will be provided by the Fire and Medical Department prior to the Intern Orientation.

Mesa's CPAT and EMT/Paramedic certification timeframes have also been extended further to accept passing CPAT results between April 13, 2019 and September 18, 2020 and EMT/Paramedic certifications by September 18, 2020.   • CPAT and EMT/Paramedic certification are required by September 18, 2020. Bring a copy of your CPAT documentation and EMT/Paramedic certification to submit at your first Intern Orientation session.
  • State of Arizona EMT or Paramedic will then be required before confirmation of conditional offers and must be kept current thereafter.
  • Mesa expects to complete reference checking and extend conditional offers in mid-late October.
  • The Mesa 2021-1 Academy is expected to begin in late January/early February 2021.

Invitations to Mesa's First Interviews were sent to those on the Eligible List for Mesa who scored 84% or better. Registration closed Wednesday, February 19, 2020, 8:00 am Arizona time.

Written Exam scores and status updates have been sent by email to all applicants who took the Written Exam. Applicants who scored 69% or better have been placed on the Eligible List for the agency/agencies for which you indicated on your application that you would like to be considered. If you submitted multiple applications, we moved forward with the last application you submitted. To view your application, you can log into your governmentjobs.com account and click on the Applications & Status tab. Each Department will now facilitate their own process and will contact applicants moving forward with their Department. You may be invited to participate in the process with multiple Departments. Applicants in the selection process for Gilbert and Queen Creek will also receive instructions directly from those agencies for completing applications for their Departments.

Please read your email carefully as it includes a link at no charge to you for the FPSI Orientation Guide for the exam. This Orientation Guide is intended to help you understand what to expect and includes sample multiple-choice questions, but there is not a specific study guide with information to study and learn for this test. This is the only guide endorsed by these Departments for this test. This joint recruitment for Firefighter - Recruit and the Written Exam will be used to establish an Eligible List for the Mesa Fire and Medical Department, Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department, and Queen Creek Fire and Medical Department. Each Department will then facilitate the remainder of their own process. Please read this entire posting for information and instructions.

Firefighter - Recruit is the entry class, as these Departments do not accept lateral transfers of Firefighters from other Departments. While in the testing and selection processes, ride-along opportunities may be on-hold.

  • Applications for Gilbert and Queen Creek, CPAT documentation, certifications, resumes, etc. may be requested later in the individual Departments' testing and selection processes.
  • To be invited to test, your answers on the supplemental application questions must truthfully indicate: Yes, you will be 18 years of age or older by Monday, January 13, 2020; Yes, you will have a high school diploma or GED both by Monday, January 13, 2020; Yes, you have or can obtain an Arizona Class D (standard) Driver's License by hire date; and No, you do not have an ignition interlock device (IID) at the time of application. This information will be verified during the hiring process and falsification of information will result in disqualification. For out-of-state applicants who would be relocating if hired, new Arizona residents can transfer their license from another state.
  • Integrity is highly valued, and it is essential that you be honest and truthful. During the application process, you will also be asked questions related to criminal and traffic violation convictions. The information disclosed in these sections will not necessarily bar you from further consideration. Other factors will be considered such as the nature of the conviction(s), job relatedness, and business necessity.

Applicants who meet the requirements to test will be invited to the Written Exam. The email invitations will include instructions for registering for the Written Exam, information about the exam and logistics, and a link to download Fire & Police Selection Inc.'s (FPSI) Candidate Orientation Guide for the Comprehensive Examination Battery for Entry Level Firefighter at no charge. This is intended to help you understand what to expect and includes sample multiple-choice questions, but there is not a specific study guide with information to study and learn for this test.

The Written Exam on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 will be used to establish the Eligible List of applicants qualified to move forward in the processes for Mesa, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. You must complete the Written Exam in-person at the designated testing site. There will be both a morning session and an afternoon session, and registration will be on a first-come, first serve basis.

If you are invited to the Written Exam and may require reasonable accommodation due to a disability to participate in the Written Exam, please download the Reasonable Accommodation Request form at http://mesaaz.gov/home/showdocument?id=9322 and email the completed form to Christy Trevino at christy.trevino@mesaaz.gov by Monday, January 27, 2020, 8:00 a.m. Arizona time.

According to A.R.S. 38-492, Preference Points are awarded to veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States, disabled persons, disabled veterans, a veteran's spouse or surviving spouse under certain circumstances, and veterans with service-connected disabilities. For Preference Points, a copy of your official documentation verifying eligibility for Preference Points (example: DD214, Form FL-802, etc.) must be submitted on the Written Exam day. Please bring a copy of the documentation to leave at the Written Exam and retain the original for yourself. For Veteran's Preference Points, the documentation must indicate both the length of service and character of service. Preference points are added only to passing scores on the Written Exam.

The Written Exam will be scored off-site. Your Written Exam score and your Eligible List status will then be emailed to you by City of Mesa Human Resources by Thursday, February 13, 2020, 6:00 pm Arizona time.
